The Mystery of God (Revelation 10:7) Has Long Been Finished

Series: “Little Gems from Our Study of the Book of Revelation”

The following study was published yesterday in The Fulfilled Connection (TFC) Magazine, and was adapted from our study of Revelation 10:

“…in the days of the sounding of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, the mystery of God would be finished, as He declared to His servants the prophets” (Revelation 10:7).

Like so many of the visions and prophecies in the book of Revelation, this one has a rich background in the Old Testament. John was told that the finishing of “the mystery of God” had been foretold by “His servants the prophets.” For a long time, the prophets had been looking forward to what John was about to witness!

Before we examine verse 7 and the meaning of “the mystery of God,” let’s briefly consider the context of this verse. The first six trumpet judgments are featured in Revelation 8-9. (One earlier post discusses the third trumpet, Wormwood, and another discusses the fifth trumpet, the locust invasion.) Then in Revelation 10:

  • A mighty angel comes down from heaven, whose appearance (verse 1) is similar to that of Jesus in Revelation 1:15-16, and his behavior resembles that of “the man clothed in linen” who announces the shattering of the holy people in Daniel 12:7.
  • This mighty angel “sets his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land” (verses 2, 5).
  • He swears that, without any further delay (verse 6), the sounding of the seventh trumpet would bring about the completion of the mystery of God (verse 7).

The expression, “His servants the prophets” (verse 7), was commonly used in the Old Testament to refer to the prophets God sent to the nation of Israel (e.g. II Kings 9:7, Jeremiah 7:25, Zechariah 1:6, and especially Daniel 9:6). The expression, “the mystery of God,” should ring a bell for anyone familiar with the epistles written by Paul. He speaks of this mystery in Romans 16:25-26 (see also Rom. 11:25), but he covers this topic most thoroughly in his epistles to the Ephesians (1:7-10, 2:11-3:11, 5:31-32, 6:18-20) and to the Colossians (1:24-27, 2:1-4, 4:3-4).

Paul told the Ephesians that they could perceive his insight into “the mystery of Christ” which was not made known to previous generations as it had been revealed to the apostles and prophets in his day (3:4-5). Then in Ephesians 3:6, Paul explicitly defines this mystery, and this definition is most crucial to our understanding of Revelation 10:7.

“This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

Indeed, in the previous chapter, Paul had already declared that Jesus had “broken down the middle wall of division” between Jews and Gentiles, creating “one new man from the two” (Eph. 2:14-15). They were joined together “into a holy temple in the Lord” (verse 21) and were “being built together for a habitation of God in the Spirit” (verse 22). This, of course, lines up with other New Testament declarations that, in Jesus, there is no difference, no favoritism, and no distinction between Jews and non-Jews (Romans 10:12, Galatians 3:28, Colossians 3:11).

Here is one place where fulfilled eschatology and futurist eschatology can stand very far apart. Steve Gregg has edited an excellent book titled, “Revelation: Four Views (A Parallel Commentary).” His book features parallel commentaries from four different viewpoints regarding the book of Revelation. We have already observed how “the mystery of God” is clearly defined throughout the New Testament. Notice, then, how this phrase in Revelation 10:7 is defined in vastly different ways by [1] futurists and [2] preterists in Gregg’s book:

Futurist Interpretations of Revelation 10:7
Preterist Interpretations of Revelation 10:7
“Everything will then be made plain. The mystery of retribution—the mystery of predestination—the mystery of the great struggle between light and darkness and good and evil—all will be explained then” (H.A. Ironside, pp. 209-211).
“This ‘Mystery’ is a major aspect of the letters to the Ephesians and Colossians: the union of believing Jews and Gentiles in one church, without distinction” (David Chilton, p. 208).
“The reference to the mystery of God seems to mean truth concerning God Himself which has not been fully revealed. It is often overlooked, however, that the mystery is said to have been ‘declared to his servants the prophets’ (v. 7). The mystery of God which is declared as subject to fulfillment is unfolded therefore in the Old Testament in many passages which speak of the establishment of the kingdom of God on earth” (John Walvoord, p. 209).
“The completion of the mystery of God (v. 7) refers to the fact that the ‘predominantly Jewish nature of the church was to be ended by the destruction of the temple, the distinctive feature in which it centered.’ The mystery itself, of course, is… ‘that the Gentiles should come into the church on an equal footing with the Jews, not first having to become Jews themselves…’” (Jay Adams, p. 208).
[The mystery of God is] the secret of His allowing Satan to have his own way, and man too (that is to say, the wonder of evil prospering and of good being trodden underfoot)” [William Kelly, p. 209].

“How great has been that mystery! Evil had apparently triumphed; the heavens for so long have been silent. Satan had been permitted to be the god of this age deceiving the nations… And now the time has come when the mystery of God will be completed” (Arno C. Gaebelein, p. 209).

Each of these futurist interpretations of Revelation 10:7 completely miss Paul’s clear definition of the mystery of God. Perhaps, among futurists, there is a deliberate reluctance to compare Scripture with Scripture in this case, knowing that the first century transition from the old covenant to the new covenant (Hebrews 8:13) is easy to see here.

In this passage (Revelation 10:1-7), we can see the significance of the angel standing with one foot on the sea and one foot on the land (verses 2, 5). Numerous scholars have recognized a Scriptural pattern where “the sea” often represents Gentile nations and “the land” (or “the earth”) represents Israel. P.S. Desprez, for example, in his 1855 book, “The Apocalypse Fulfilled,” wrote the following concerning the expression “those who dwell on the earth” which appears often in Revelation:

“But the words in question are sometimes found qualified by governing considerations which define and determine their meaning, and this is always the case, when they are found in connection with the governing clauses ‘they that dwell’… Then they have, and can have, only one meaning; then they refer only to one land and to one people, and this land and this people must be the land and the people of Judea.”

My 3-part study on this pattern can be seen here (part 1, part 2, part 3).

So if the sea is interpreted as a reference to the Gentiles, and the land as a reference to Israel (i.e. the Jews, generally speaking), then the image of the angel with one foot on both suggests a bridging of the gap between the two. This is precisely what we see in Paul’s definition of the mystery of God and his teachings that, in Christ, Jews and Gentiles are one. “Gentiles in the flesh” were once “aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise” (Ephesians 2:11-12), but, in Christ, they were “no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens” (verse 19).

The picture of the angel bridging the gap between land and sea is a beautiful symbol of God’s bringing Jews and Gentiles together in Himself on an equal basis, having torn down the dividing wall by His work on the cross. This mystery was made complete in John’s day, in the first century. All delay soon came to an end (Rev. 10:6) and the temple in Jerusalem, the chief symbol of old covenant Judaism and Israel’s national pride, was brought down forever in 70 AD in favor of “a holy temple in the Lord…a dwelling place for God by the Spirit” (Eph. 2:21-22).

“…but in the days of the sounding of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, the mystery of God would be finished, as He declared to His servants the prophets” (Revelation 10:7).

Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud voices in heaven, saying, ‘The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever! …Then the temple of God was opened in heaven, and the ark of His covenant was seen in His temple…” (Revelation 11:15-19).

  1. I think that first I should warn you that I am a futurist commenting. However, you will soon see, I’m not like most futurists, and my views are quite distinct. I think my biggest problem is that being half correct is the same as being all wrong. The mystery of God is actually a revelation of the Trinity, seeing as God has made ‘the two one flesh.’ Just as God is one – echad – so Adam and Eve were one – echad – so are we one – echad.

But my real concern lies more in the area of whether this is fulfilled or not. Many of the Old Testament prophets spoke both to their day and age, and also to a future fulfillment of that prophecy. There was a sense of the immediacy of John’s words being fulfilled with the union of Jew and Gentile in Christ, and the destruction of the Temple, but there is a more ultimate fulfillment when “all Israel shall be saved,’ Romans 11:26. If words mean anything, that has not yet happened. The prophets in the Old Testament spoke of a day and age when there would be no more war (Isaiah 2:4, Micah 4:3, Daniel 9:24, Zechariah 9:10), the heathen will clutch the skirt of a Jew because they know God (Zechariah 8:23), the nations will come up to Jerusalem to honor the feast of tabernacles (Isaiah 2:2, 27:13, 60:6, 66:18, Micah 4:2, Zechariah 8:20, 14:16), and so on.

I actually wrote a blog just the other day questioning this very thing: Israel’s purpose and destiny. http://tjustincomer.wordpress.com/2014/10/29/israels-purpose-and-destiny/ It gets into a lot more detail than I’ll be able to here. Ultimately, I know that it is up to you to come to your own conclusion, and if you’re like me, you’re probably already convinced of your own opinion. I just ask that you’d be willing to consider it. The blog post is part 2, and I’m hoping to continue that vein of thought through to the fulfillment of ‘all Israel shall be saved.’ If you are interested, stay tuned. If not, then I’m still available for debate or questions. Just don’t accuse me of not comparing Scripture with Scripture (wink).

    • Hi Tommy,

Thanks for stopping by here, and for your comment. Peace to you as well.

On what basis do you say that the angel was talking about the doctrine of the Trinity in Revelation 10:7? What reason(s) would we have for not believing that the angel was talking about the same “mystery of God” that Paul often spoke about (defined explicitly in Ephesians 3:6 as the uniting together of Jews and Gentiles in Christ)? How does the imagery of the angel standing with one foot on the land and one foot on the sea fit with the Trinity and not with a bridging of the gap between Jews and Gentiles? Since the angel said that God’s “servants the prophets” had looked forward to this mystery being finished, is there a good amount of Old Testament background showing that they were looking for the revealing of the Trinity (as opposed to God raising up the Messiah, Jesus, as a hope for all nations)?

Concerning the timing of Revelation’s fulfillment, it’s good to take note of John’s words in this regard:

“The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants–things which must shortly take place… Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near” (Revelation 1:1-3; see also Revelation 22:6, 10, 12, 20).

I won’t take the time to address all the Scripture passages you brought up, but here are questions on two of them:

[1] Seeing that Zechariah 8 speaks of a day when Jews would be known for knowing God, is there significance in the fact that 3000 Jews were saved on the Day of Pentecost, that Jews were added to the church daily in the book of Acts, and that it was Jews (Paul included) who first took the message of the gospel to the Gentiles?

[2] Since Jesus now tabernacles with His people (e.g. II Corinthians 6:16, Revelation 21:3), and the church had already come to New Jerusalem in the first century (e.g. Galatians 4:21-31, Hebrews 12:22-24), is it possible that in Christ is fulfilled the prophecies of nations coming to Jerusalem for the feast of tabernacles?

I have your article open in another tab and have started to read it.

      Blessings,
      Adam

      • I do believe that the angel was speaking on the same mystery that Paul was speaking on, namely, that there is neither Jew nor Gentile, male nor female, slave nor free in Christ. We are His Body. We, as His Body, are a representation of Jesus in the Father and the Father in Jesus (John 17:21). Indirect as it might be, I have assumed that our unity is a reflection of the Triune nature of God.

I used to be Preterist. I know that neither your position nor mine can truly be expressed fully in a few comments, so I don’t necessarily expect you to reply to all of the Scriptures given. Many of them are given to better help frame the question than stand as points.

I agree that one of the key things to focus upon is ‘His servants the prophets.’ Paul claimed that his epistle to the Romans was explaining the ‘gospel promised beforehand by the holy prophets.’ I think that ultimately, the message of the prophets is about a world that is finally living according to God’s original intention. The people of God, the nations, creation itself, the angelic beings, and all things created are now working together hand-in-hand to glorify the Lord. For me, that is the Millennium after Christ has returned.

In regards to Zechariah 8, I don’t think that we can simply say that because many Jews have believed in Jesus, both in the first century and onward, that it is fulfilled. Just like Romans 11:25-26 seems to be indicating a literal fulfillment of ‘all Israel shall be saved,’ so too is Zechariah expecting a literal fulfillment where Jerusalem itself will receive these blessings.

And in regards to the New Jerusalem, I also view this in light of, “You are seated with Christ in heavenly places,” Ephesians 2:6. We are ambassadors of the heavenly reality, the New Jerusalem – Zion, and this goes with my previous statement. I think that the prophets saw this heavenly Jerusalem and expected fully that the city Jerusalem they lived in was going to be a manifestation of that heavenly vision. Once again, I see the application to these as being ‘spiritual’ truths (can I call it that?) as marked out by many passages in the New Testament, but partial or spiritual fulfillment doesn’t necessitate utter fulfillment.

  2. I had an encounter with God that led me to writing some books that is yet to b published…. It actually by revelation knowledge finished the mystery of God, as i a, called as one of the two witnesses in the symbol of the two lampstands typifying my order of call as a remnant (Isaiah 37: 31) and VOW (vessel of worship) (1 Samuel 1:11)… I will not say anything to defend my calling but i will just outline the reality that God took me into to finish His mystery…
First book…titled the mystery of true inspiration
second book…titled… The reality of the forbidden fruit…
3rd… Total obedience to the will of God…..
4th…. Back to the place of God’s original intention…

Then the recent that came after i had wrestled with God and had had obvious seal on my right wrist immediately there was shift in the realm of the spirit with respect to the date 06-06-16 and 16-06-16 the key of David was released and God gave me the Divine wisdom to access all the Divine program codes….in d course of this period these books was birthed….

    The reality of His glory

the journey of light to glory
    Divine programming

the trignometriv function of my Divine Program

then the last one…. Titled… My life.

I am not here to debate, because by election of grace what has been kept sealed since 2000 b.c. Has been unsealed and released into the finger tip of an insignificant remnant who never thought was worthy of God’s grace, but He still gave it me any way. Lots of what we read online and on internet are slight twist and it is never of God but deception from the pit of hell… Even theology., anything that has logic is not of God….. If you are interested to find out the truth you can call my line +2348171966460 or email me on linkpathegah@yahoo.com…. But it will better on calls, because i have disconnected from social network and even discipline myself to off some electronic platforms, because i am exposing a secret that controls almost all the electronic platforms with what i titled Divine Programming and immediately i started on this subject, while i typed android, i my android shut down and refused to come. While i went to fix it, it mysterious disappeared from my pocket. So for now, i am using asha 200 Nokia phone.

  3. John was stopped from writing what the seven thunder uttered in Revelation 10:4 but he ate the book in the verse 9 he ate the little book and in verse 10 d book was sweet like honey in his mouth but bitter in his stomach. All these are symbolic revelation. That contains the revelation knowledge of the truth that finished the mystery of God….. He was stopped from writing that book because that book was not for his Dimension, but the new dimension we are in. And by election of grace…. I in AM is mandated to deliver John’s pregnancy that troubles his stomach, i am by election of grace… Hannah twin Son, who carries the double of prophet Samuel….so, to finish they mystery of God,…. They will spiritual Elisha with the double portion of Elijah’s anointing and spiritual Samuel with the double portion of Samuel’s anointing who was one lampstand. Yes! I know this is deep… But any one who is spiritual will understand the dimension i am sounding from. I have the little book the John ate by election of grace… My tomb is numb writing mysteries. The food i eat, is to keep writing for the fullness of the time of which we are already in.

  4. Patrick/Igoche,

Your silly claims are another example of the foolishness that can take place when people don’t compare Scripture with Scripture and look at the Bible in its original context. What you said is not deep. It’s absurd and self-delusion. The mystery of God was revealed by Paul in Ephesian 3:6. “This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.” It’s the one new man created in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2).

It’s the same message as what I wrote in this post. I apologize for taking a harsh tone with you, though. I still believe your claims are way off base and extremely unbiblical, but I love you too and I wish the best for you.

It is really a are privilege to had encountered your blog. I am having issues typing because of the device i am using is not sophisticated. So, it is impeding my speed. There are lots i need to reveal, but can’t on this platform. It will be better i intimate personally with you…
What Moses saw is now resident in us……..
In the time of the Old Testament, Moses saw the glory of God,…. And saw God as the first and wrote the foundation truth about scripture as Genesis and the other 4 books that succeeds Genesis, while in the New Testament Order, John saw the glory of God(Jesus) intimated with Him and had the true knowledge of who He is…who revealed Himself as the First and the Last, and his (John) brought about the summary of the entire scriptures from Genesis to Revelation, and this brought about the revelation of the time we are in. We the sons of God in this time are living the revealed life of God,…. So nothing is hidden from us, even the deep things of the Spirit. And that was why scripture records in 1 John 3:1-3….(read it)
the coming of Christ is simply the true revelation of Christ Jesus. And the reality of this, brings us to a point where we cannot sin, because His seeds remains in us (1 John 3 :9) and this reveals total transformation from the real, of flesh to that of Spirit and that is we are no longer called living being, but living spirit. This is the picture God has been trying to paint out from Genesis..to Revelation, but the devil keep distorting our vision by creating the wrong mindset, so as not to see the reality of the image God is presenting to us……..this image is an image that cannot be revealed by flesh and blood… Remember; He told Peter flesh and blood has not revealed that Divine truth to Him, by Divine Revelation to prepare our mind for the of the fullness of time…. Simply put, the reality is DIVINE REVELATION, for those who are sold for the truth and had sign death warrants having that, their is in dying for the truth… Flesh and blood has not reveal the reality to me, it can only be God….. You can access with thought, because it won’t make sense, it will only make faith. All the books i have written, not published… I am not the Author, i am only but the secretary to the Author who is the end of all mysteries… LIGHT. Jesus is, and He lives wholly in me. I don’t want HIM in but He refused to go, He said, i am His Divine program written in His to finish the mystery of God and shipwreck the kingdom of Darkness.
Like John, when i had my encounter that led to the birthing of all the books i wrote, He instructed to just keep writing, not to try to think it, else i will mussels it. It was a sweet journey from 29th of November, 2015 to 5th of April, 2016 when i had to close the revelation. Since then, i wake up every 12:00 am to either intimate with Him or work in the realm of the spirit, either writing or typing the ones i have already written, in order to meet up with the time, because the Time is short and i must meet up with the time, which is now, before the misconceptions sweep through the globe. The reality of this revelation truth must spread to annul the effect of misconceptions(lies from the pit of hell) caused by religion, false teachers of the Word that appears to be true as known all over the world and the antichrist who is already in the world, sponsoring the slight twist of the word of God through the New Age Movement(NAM)=(MAN as exposed by the New Dimension Movement of which i have the spiritual key.) repositioning the people’s mindset not to detect his deceptions by subtly and slightly twisting the word of God to suite his selfish interest even when it did not seem to appear selfish, ti,e will reveal it it the face of light, deceiving the gullible.

Emphasizing the mystery of God will be finished….has nothing to do with what we think, it has all to do with God’s thought, to run and execute His final Divine to restore man to to the place of His original intention, which is class 7, not 6 which is the number of man and the antichrist is coming with the triple power of man 666, one short of the number of evil which is 4… So the exponent of the devil in the order of man is 4, but that of God is infinite, so we the sons of God will operate from the dimension of the Father’s love, to utterly shipwreck the kingdom of darkness. I don’t want to say anything about the subject until …the administrator, understand the dimension i am speak from and place a call. Love you guys….

  6. Patience is key to reaching d depth of knowledge. Do not b swift to judge, be patient to see where the knowledge is coming from, then at d end, you can choose to accept or discard.
I sounded self-promoting and delusive according to you… But you weren’t patient to hear me out. You sounded very insultive and i don’t it is healthy for such kind of your life giving platform, mean while.. The love of God still unite us.. I just want to say few things i got by revelation in my encounter with LIGHT travelling where i was brought to the way(cross) that separates light from darkness.

The mystery of God is finished in God alone.. As we access His glory to see Him as He really is, having united us as one through grace, evident in His shaded blood(seal) on the cross of Calvary, such that the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, and there is no Jews or Gentiles, or Barbarians, Greeks, but all is in God and God is all. Paul’s letter to the Persians spoke about the reality of this time we are in, and following the tone of his writing, you will discover there is more to the mystery of God and the one he was able to reach by election of grace was more like an introduction to usher the New Dimension reality which is be revealed in the future which we are right in. Paul’s message here in Persians 3: 1-7 is crystal clear because it reveals volumes as mystory revealed, not mystery finished…. That was shy he clearly stated if you read carefully the verse 3b “as i have briefly written already…” explains what he had written is just but an introduction of the much that the mystery of God will be finished as emphasised in Rev. 10: 7. He also clearly stated that other age was not known to the sons of men as it has now been revealed by the Spirit of His holy apostles and prophets. In that light, i also write, that what was not made known to men of other ages as revealed by the Spirit of God, through the holy mandated apostles and prophets has now been made known to us by election of grace to finish the revealed mystery of God…..
The revealing of mystery of God does not imply the finishing of the mystery of God, so don’t confuse Ephesians 3:1-7 with Revelation 10: 7. When you read through your harsh text, this was the scripture that flashed into my mind (Acts 22: 17, 22) since you say my claims are unbiblical. I did not claim anything, i only say what He had revealed, believe it or not, it doesnt change the reality(Romans 3:3), who am i to claim something divine. I never thought i was worthy of grace, but He still gave it to me any way.
We need to understand the purpose of mystery (Eph. 3: 8-13), and this spans beyond our certificate and Bible researches, it is a thing of Divine revelation, Because i know i have got know deep research knowledge like you, but i have got a heart that will accept all of the reality of the one who is Omniscient. So don’t be swift to judge someone who is revealing mysteries by election of grace as self-promoting and delusive. They mystery is hidden and can only be finished in God, not in man, but you know what? God is in men who are led by His Spirit. The finishing of the mystery of God is simply THE TRUE REVELATION OF JESUS AS GOD, presenting to the world that the name “Son of God” is just but an office God came to occupy here on earth to be able to reconcile man back to Himself. Jesus is God, so we must have the true revelation of what the Son of God mean, so that we don’t end up been heretic in an attempt to explain from what we think (rational point of views). There is nothing like almost truth, almost truth is not truth, and not truth is simply define as falsehood.
Revealed mystery is not finished mystery sir! When Jesus say no one can come to the Father except through Him (John 14:6) He is simply teaching us the act of His office as Son of God which we are to function in His stead having occupied that office as Son of God and has begotten us by His blood on the cross of Calvary(which became the glorified cross typifying the WAY separating LIGHT from DARKNESS (that connects us to the dimension of light where the mystery of God will be finished)) where which He was hung to humiliate Satan in order to draw all men to Himself (mystery revealed as in Eph. 3: 1-7) to have a true knowledge of His person as God who had manifested Himself in 3-dimension all directed to man in the face of light (uniting rod of reality of Trinity as one). So that when we learn and master the act, we will be able get the clearer picture as Sons of God who is to manifest His glory, that He is the Father and that was why He said “He is one with the Father” so it is in our manifestation as sons of God who are led by His Spirit (Rom. 8: 14), that the world will get to the true knowledge that He is truly God(mystery of God finished). At this point, the devil will no longer be able to hide in the light of the manifestation of the sons of God who are revealing the true knowledge of the Son of God as God.

  7. I finally submit from the knowledge extracted from the Divine mine in the mind of God(thought):…………
The Word of God is simply a Divine program and can only be understood when we understand first that it is coded, and try to access the knowledge of the Divine codes. The execution of the divine program successful is simply the mystery of God finished as presented in Revelation 10:7 which is also simply the thought (intention) of God accomplished in the light of the Word, so that all the glory returns back to Him and the being (satan) which tends to steal into Self-glory will be completely annihilated and evil will seize to exist.
Adam, i love you with the love of God….. Wish you well in you journey to the knowledge of the mystery of God…..

I would add that “Rev 10:11 And they said to me, “You must prophesy again concerning many peoples and nations and tongues and kings.” NASU” might also be in reference to the “mystery”. But I am struggling with how or if “Rev 11:15 Then the seventh angel sounded; and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever.” NASU” is saying that “This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.” You quote Rev 11:15 but did not comment.
    Thank You Ralph
